Astana came into their FIBA Europe Cup opener heavily favoured but were given a full work out before snatching a 78-74 victory over AEK Larnaca in the final minutes of the game.
Turning Point: A game that saw eight lead changes and eight ties — with neither team enjoying a double-digit lead at any stage — went right to the wire. Astana had just nosed ahead on Niklas Caner-Medley's jump-shot when a travelling call on Iakovos Panteli 27 seconds from time handed them the ball back. They were able to take half the remaining time off the clock before Caner-Medley doubled their advantage, and AEK's night ended when Deonta Vaughn was off-target with a three-pointer.
Stats Don't Lie: With little to separate the teams, Astana were able to win the turnover battle 9-5, grabbing five steals while AEK did not have any.
Game Hero: Caner-Medley finshed with 25 points — including those when it mattered — to go with 11 rebounds.
