He began playing basketball in Ohio for the Eastern Tech High School team. As a junior, he was called one of the best rookies in the state, averaging 31.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game. Media outlets such as Cleveland.com and the Associated Press have named Johnson as the Young Men's Player of the Year and the Division's Player of the Year, respectively.

He competed in the Amateur Athletic Union summer program for the King James Shooting Stars, affiliated with NBA legend LeBron James. After attending college in 2016, Markell began playing for North Carolina State University. In his first season, he was an understudy for Dennis Smith, who is now playing for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA.

He averaged 9.7 points, 3 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game over four seasons.

Markell's professional career began in 2020 when he signed a two-year deal with Besiktas. In the 2020/21 season, he played 26 matches in the Turkish Super League, averaging 7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per match.
