The basketball club «Astana» will play the first games in 2021 in the National League in Kostanay against the local «Tobol». The matches will be held on Sunday and Monday, January 17 and 18 in Kostanay at the court of the Kostanay sports and entertainment complex, the beginning of both games at 18:00 Nur-Sultan time.

The main roster of Kostanay “Tobol” has retained the backbone of the last season, while in the off-season four players had left the team. Anton Ponomarev returned to the location of our team, Denis Degtyarev and Pavel Ilyin moved to “Kaspiy”, but Ilyin returned to “Tobol” at the beginning of the season, and Timur Sultanov, who continued his basketball career as a coach, finished his playing career. In the summer, Shaim Kuanov, Daniil Seleznev, Mikhail Shvab, Maxim Voeikov, Anton Bykov, Farid Karimullin, Konstantin Dvirny and Rustam Valiev extended their contracts with “Tobol”. Also, several newcomers from “Sinegorye” joined the team, Stanislav Rovovoy, Ruslan Chernyavsky and Konstantin Neff moved to the Kostanay team. After one season of rest from the National League, experienced Dmitry Klimov returned to the game. In addition, young players from the National Basketball Student League — Dmitry Luchko and Mikhail Mudragel, as well as a very young Anuar Simbaev joined the Kostanay squad.
Head coach:
Timur Sultanov, well-known to the Kazakhstani basketball community, who defended the colours of the Kostanay team on the court last season, already acts as the head coach of Tobol this season and is assisted by an experienced specialist Sergey Ratnikov.
Rival leaders:
The undisputed leader of the Kostanay team is Anton Bykov, who at the moment is the most effective player in the entire National League, and also, on average, implements most two-pointers and is the leader in rebounds. Konstantin Dvirny and Maxim Voeikov averaged over ten points per game. The team also includes Shaim Kuanov, Dmitry Klimov, Pavel Ilyin and Daniil Seleznev.
Tournament position:
“Astana” confidently occupies the first line of the tournament table after ten wins in ten games. And “Tobol” occupies the fifth line, having won only three matches in eight games.
Game history:
For all the time, “Astana” met with “Tobol” 35 times; the Kostanay team never won the capital's team, losing all 35 games. Despite the fact that the teams have not met in the National League this season, they have faced twice since September: once they had a friendly preseason game and in the 2020 Cup of Kazakhstan final. In both meetings, Astana celebrated major victories.
