The Latvian «VEF» is well known to Kazakhstan's basketball fans, and with «VEF» “Astana” played it’s second to last preseason game.

«VEF» has a very rich history, the club was founded  back in 1958. From 1958 to the 1991, the team constantly participated in major competitions and  became the winner of bronze medals of the USSR Championship three times. In 1992, the team was disbanded. 15 years passed before the Riga team again entered the court, this happened in 2007. In its recent history, the «VEF» 6 times became the champion of Latvia and 4 times won silver medals. In the Baltic League, the Riga team won silver medals once, in the 2010/2011 season, and also participated in the European Cup more than once. In the VTB United League, the «VEF» is an old-timer, participating in it almost from the very beginning. During that period «VEF» entered quarterfinals four times. Unfortunately, «VEF» is not participating in the VTB United League this season. The Latvian team met with “Astana” 17 times, all matches were held as part of the VTB United League regular season, and in the 2012/2013 season, fate brought them together in the quarterfinal series. The games between “Astana” and the «VEF» almost always had a drama in it, from which, in personal games, there is only one victory in favor of the Latvian team — 9: 8.

Current game also had a dramatic accent in it. After five minutes of the game, a slight advantage was on the side of our opponents, but at the end of the first quarter, “Astana” was in the lead by three points. The second quarter went in an equal fight with the advantage of “Astana”, and by the halftime, «VEF» was only 2 points behind. In the third quarter, «VEF» took the lead, but in the end “Astana” retained its 2-points advantage over the final quarter. Nevertheless, the Latvian team was able to turn the pace of the game in their favour in the last 10 minutes and won 84:77 (21:24, 17:16, 24:24, 22:13).

Jeremiah Hill scored 20 points in this game along with 3 rebounds and 5 assists; Malcolm Hill scored 16 points, 3 rebounds and dished out 6 assists; Coti Clarke scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.
